The Story Surrounding Seattle Grunge Bands

Seattle grunge bands started a music revolution in the late 80’s and early 90’s. Check out some of the major players of the era.

Early Development of Heavy Metal and the Divergence of Hard Rock and Metal

It can largely be agreed that Heavy Metal music originated from the late sixties to early seventies, evolving as the sounds of Blues Rock and Psychedelic Rock intermingled in the turning of the era and took on a heavier, more aggressive mood and performance style. Driven basslines and electrifying guitar solos that scaled the fretboard seemed to be matched with excited syncopations, and the element of distorted power chords helped to define the flavor. Although the focus of the genre shifts with the ages (part of its longevity due to this ability), the basic formula remains audible through…

I Don’t Believe in Beatles

John Lennon has always been, and always will be, my favorite Beatle. I guess that, honestly, I was drawn to his life’s story because of his tragic end. How could a peaceful, fun-loving, gentle man come to such a violent, senseless end? After reading many books and watching many documentaries about Lennon, I came to find that he wasn’t always peaceful and fun-loving. He had his dark side which is much clearer to see in his solo work than his “I Want to Hold Your Hand” years. His solo career had him singing from opposite ends of the spectrum, like, “Imagine all the people living life in peace” and, conversely, “Those freaks were right when they said you was dead/The one mistake you made was in your head” (an obvious stab at fellow ex-Beatle Paul McCartney). Lennon was a very emotional person and his feelings, both positive and negative, wore heavily on him. This was also reflected in his solo music career.

Indian Wedding and Folk Songs

An Indian wedding is a celebration of union of two individuals, families and communities. It is very unique due to its richness in culture and tradition which the people have kept for so long. There are songs associated with Indian wedding and without rendering these songs, a marriage ceremony is not complete. On the other hand, Indian folk songs are traditional songs that have survived many ages with richness in history. They are popular across the country because they symbolize the cultural diversity of the people of India.

Coloured Vinyl Records and Their Collectibility

In the days before CDs and digital downloads, the regular format of records was vinyl. Albums came in glorious 12 inch format double sided with one of the by-product attractions being the often intricate and magnificent cover artwork. But it did not stop there as vinyl offers flexibility and collectability thanks to the ability to make the discs themselves available in different colours or even picture disc format where the record itself looks just like the cover artwork. This gives coloured vinyl records and picture discs some attraction to both fan and collector alike with the potential to increase in value.

Karaoke – A Good Choice!

Portmanteau is a strange word, as strange as the words that result from it. Case in point is Karaoke. Let’s define karaoke for those whose encounter with the word is like that of a third kind. Kara means “empty” in Japanese; okesutora means “orchestra”. The resulting word: empty orchestra. Now who wants an empty orchestra? Apparently, Asians do. Karaoke started in Japan around the 70’s, a brainchild of musician Daisuke Inoue, who most people believe is the inventor of the Karaoke machine. A decade later, it has spread towards the entire length and breadth of South-East Asia like an invading horde, then eventually the rest of the world. So popular was Karaoke that it gave birth to a sensation: karaoke bars. So popular were these establishments that musicians/entertainers who turned this past time into a living made a lucrative business out of it. So popular it is that it even spawned a child: the Videoke. Now this is innovation at its best.
