The Beatles Books I Own – My Five Favourites

I’ve been collecting books about The Beatles since my early teens, although I admit my trawl of Beatle-related volumes has diminished in the last ten years or so. However, I find it almost therapeutic to revisit some of those Beatles books I grew up poring over and I’d like to recommend five from my collection that I can safely class as being amongst the favourites of all the Beatles books I own.

The Nick Lowe Discography – A Selective Lowdown

Acclaimed performer and producer Nick Lowe was born in the UK, in Walton-On-Thames in 1949. He first found his professional feet in the band Kippington Lodge, formed with friend Brinsley Schwarz in the late 1960s. Lowe went on to become a major personality on the UK music scene, leaving an extensive legacy of great songs and records behind him.

Rockabilly Displays Many Forms of “Purity”

The rockabilly scene, just like pretty much any other scene I can think of, has its purists. And just as with all purists, rockabilly’s version can be a little hard to take sometimes. After all, what does it mean to be a rockabilly purist? How can anyone identify what is pure rockabilly and what is not? In my view, you can’t. Rockabilly has too many forms of purity to narrow it down quite that easily!

New Alternative Music: Joy Division Reincarnated for a New Generation of Indie Fans

Peter Hook and the Light brought their “Unknown Pleasures” show back to London’s Scala, much to the joy of Joy Division fans both young and not so young. Young fans looking for new alternative music will find that, despite the passage of 30 years, Joy Division’s songs sound fresh, and they will see the clear influence this band exerts right now on many of today’s most famous names. Peter Hook and the Light, like the original Joy Division, is a different beast entirely than Joy Division on their two studio albums. To me, this is disappointing because it tends to make their live sound too similar to a host of other rock bands. That said, Peter Hook is one of the most important figures in British popular music in the last…well, ever to be frank. If he prefers to ditch the complicated audio processing and return to his roots, then he is quite probably right to do so.

Different Kinds of Bass Guitars

A band is not complete, or even qualified to be called a band, if it does not have the bass guitar. The bass guitar is never in the spotlight for anything and therefore many people mistake it for just any other guitar like the rhythm or the lead guitar. However, the bass guitar does really play an important role when all things are considered in that it gives life to any band and adds quality of the music.

Drugs and Songs and Rock ‘N’ Roll

Ever wondered what some songs are really about? We’ve got a selection of tracks, all accused of hidden DRUG-themes. Are these Rockers guilty as charged?

Vintage Guitar Amps Versus Modern Guitar Amps

Whilst it’s an accepted fact among the guitar playing populace of the world that tube amps sound better than solid state, this generalisation can be dissected into various strands. The first and most prominent is age, those who started playing when there wasn’t an alternative to the tube guitar amps, and there are many of the current day guitar gods who fall into this category. They developed their sound on a tube amp and therefore their preference for this technology is well founded. As the technology developed and alternatives to tubes have emerged; first it was solid state electronics and nowadays we have the modeling capability of the micro-processors, which can reproduce those warm sustaining tube sounds, the choice is phenomenal.

The Top 25 Dirty South Songs of the Decade – And Why

As I was sitting in my office in Miami, me and several DJs were having a very intense discussion as to what were the top 25 dirty south songs of the decade. Even though we all know that choosing your favorite rap songs is solely based on one’s opinion. I decided to take a crack at it to see how my picks would line up with the rest. But the criteria that I used to make my picks were that the songs had to be club bangers. I think that you will be very surprised as to what my picks are.

The Convenience Of The MP3

Digital audio has been one of the most fascinating aspects of modern technology. Music lovers have rode the wave with 8-track, Vinyl Long Play, cassettes, and compact discs. Each format had a season before it was replaced by something else with greater quality.

The Angry Truth With Henry Rollins

Depending on your age and musical tastes, you might’ve been exposed to Henry Rollins as he ground it out in punk rock titans Black Flag. Or like me, you might’ve been an impressionable teen, watching that “Liar” video get heavy play on MTV’s Alternative Nation. I’m sure there are folks out there who only know Rollins from his books and spoken word performances, or his numerous television and film appearances. The tattooed dude with the muscles, right? Regardless, you know that guy. Almost as fascinating as the cult of personality that has grown around Henry Rollins over the years is the way he’s deftly navigated a creative life, always working with a desperation that one day it could all go away-IT being the audiences, the paying public, the speaking gigs and acting opportunities. That fear is common in Hollywood, but in Rollins’ case I think it has only served as motivation: to leave it on the stage every single night (whether he’s speaking or screaming) and make every sentence count. One reason why I can claim I’ve never, ever been disappointed in Henry Rollins.

This Place Is Death – An Interview With Chino Moreno of Deftones

12:30pm, Tuesday March 15th. I lay in bed with a nasty fever as I receive a call from the Deftones publicist letting me know Chino would be available for an interview at 3:30 that day. I knew I had an upcoming interview with him, but no idea it would be that soon, so needless to say, I was not completely prepared. Luckily, I, along with some close friends (who also love the Deftones) were able to come up with a quick interview in the short time we had! My gratitude goes out to them as well as Chino Moreno for taking the time to do the interview!

Trey Songz – Passion, Pain and Pleasure Album Review

Since the golden age of unmatchable male R&B singers (Babyface, Brian McKnight and R Kelly), it has been a tedious job filtering through the wannabes and one album wonders to find any legit R&B stars. The bar has been set, and it has been set high.
